Thomas Vetter, M.D., M.P.H. is the Director of Perioperative Care, and Professor of Surgery and Perioperative Care at the Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. He is currently the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the preeminent journal, Anesthesia & Analgesia.
Vetter was most recently the Maurice S. Albin Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine; Vice Chair and Director, Division of Pain Medicine; Medical Director, Preoperative Assessment, Consultation, and Treatment Clinic; Professor of Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care; Professor of Pediatrics; Professor of Health Policy and Organization; at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). While at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Vetter lead the development of a pioneering Perioperative Surgical Home model and an innovative, comprehensive Geriatric Pain Management Program.
After receiving his undergraduate degree at Oberlin College, he attended medical school at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Vetter completed residency training at the University of Florida (Gainesville) in Pediatrics and Anesthesiology and a fellowship in Pediatric Anesthesiology at Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital. He also holds a Masters in Public Health from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University.
Vetter has published extensively in outcomes research, comparative effectiveness, quality improvement, patient-reported health measures, healthcare policy and economics, clinical epidemiology, and healthcare disparities. He has lectured nationally on various topics in anesthesiology, perioperative medicine, pain management, health policy, and research design.
