Shetal Vohra-Gupta, Ph.D., MSW is an Assistant Professor at the Steve Hicks School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin. She earned her Master of Social Work at the University of Michigan and her doctoral degree from the University of Houston. After attaining her master’s, she worked as a licensed clinical social worker in a psychiatric facility for children and adolescents, and in emergency rooms conducting psychiatric evaluations. After obtaining her doctorate, Vohra-Gupta focused on disparities-related research at the intersection of race, policy, and health.
She is particularly interested in analyzing social and health policies and how they positively and negatively influence the social determinants of health. She is also co-leading a research study examining sexual assault kits in the city of Austin and through this work conducting policy research around the determinants of violence. In addition, she is working collaboratively to analyze social and health policies around neighborhood poverty and its influence on birth outcomes in black and white women.
