About Us

Welcome to CHASP

Welcome to the Center for Health and Social Policy (CHASP) at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs. President Lyndon B. Johnson is known for championing some of the boldest reforms to health and social policy with his introduction of the Great Society programs, which included Medicare and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act that provided major funding for public schools.

Today, scholars at CHASP continue in the spirit of President Johnson in asking bold questions about how health and social policy can be improved and in designing and conducting rigorous and innovative research that advances policymaking and health, economic and social program outcomes. A hallmark of the research, education and outreach efforts of CHASP faculty, staff and students is their direct connection to public sector initiatives, agencies and policymakers who are working to address pressing health, economic and social needs that have not been confronted on this large scale since the 1960s.

In addition to conducting groundbreaking policy research, CHASP serves as the home for the Social, Health, Economic, and Education Policymakers (SHEP), a student organization that investigates social, health, and economic policy issues beyond the classroom. CHASP also provides a forum for debate and dialogue among today’s foremost policymakers and scholars about critical health and social policy issues.

We invite you to browse our website and publications, to attend our events that are open to the public, and to engage with our faculty, students and the broader community as we work to inform and shape health and social policy and improve individual and societal well-being.
